Chapter Eight

Elena was furious.

And it showed.

It showed in the way she slammed the connecting door between Harriet’s office and Mr. Derek’s; it showed in the way she threw her ballet tote across the floor so that it skidded over the floor and bumped on the wall; it showed in her furious pacing and the ‘do not touch me’ attitude every time Jake tried to hold her in place.

“I can’t believe that that, that detective, could even suggest that I may have had something to do with Justin’s accident,” she told Jake in a furious whisper. “That everything somehow revolves around me.”

“Elena…” Jake tried to catch her again, but she was having none of it.

She turned on him. “Do you know what he said? What that man said?”

Jake humored her. “Not a clue.”

She made a face. “He warned me not to leave the city without his permission, that’s what. The damn nerve.”

“Elena, calm down.”

She stopped her pacing to stare open-mouthed. “Calm down? Calm down?”

He held her in place to make his point.

“This is exactly what Detective Harris wants.” His words were low but emphatic. “You losing control. Getting mad and upset. It makes for mistakes, unintended statements, revelations. That’s how the police work. How I work when on a fraud case.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“It’s so awful,” she whispered.

“Come here,” he said. He must have caught the catch in her voice because he pulled her into his arms, and she burrowed into the temporary safety he offered.

“Stop worrying. You know you had nothing to do with what’s been happening. I know it. Derek knows it. Even Detective Harris knows it.”

“He said the bottle I found definitely had prescription drug residue.”

“Did he, now?”

“But not what kind.” She looked at him. “Was Justin sick? Was he taking medicine that could have caused his fall?”

“Not that we know of.” He considered. “I may be able to dig into that. What were those letters you said you saw on the ripped label?”

Elena blurted them.

“I’ll ask my assistant to check on search engines if any medicines fit those letters.”

“You have an assistant?”

His smile went up by a megawatt. “And staff too.”

“And here I only have a volunteer Guinea Pig.”

“A what?”

“Martina’s words, not mine.” And she explained what Martina had said.

Hilarity ensued on both their parts. But it did help defuse some of her tension.

“Mastery of the English language is not one of her virtues,” Jake said. “Poor woman.”

“Funny, though. What’s not so funny is her obsession to dance Black Rhapsody and her plans. Everyone heard. It’ll soon be in Mr. Derek’s ear, either through the rumor mill, or definitely through Anne.”

She stopped, at that instant realizing in what office they were standing.

“Relax. He went to get Broderick,” he said, reading her mind.

She sank into the plush leather armchair facing Mr. Derek’s desk and tried to relax. “Have you any idea what he wants to discuss? I mean, apart from the obvious.”

“About that…”

Whatever else he would have said was cut short by the entrance of Derek and Broderick.

“Good,” Derek said, sitting
